Join The African Coalition of Communities Responsive to Climate Change (ACCRCC) at the African Climate Week Side Event at the Arbedare Hall, Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Nairobi Friday 8 September 2023 from 10:30 -11: 30 am. The session will give insightful discussions on the Nexus between mental health and climate disasters

The increase in frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and overall climate change has the potential to negatively affect the psychological or mental health of mankind, particularly among the increasing populations of vulnerable people in Africa. Indirect effects of climate change, such as environmental deterioration and resource loss have an influence on mental health as climate change- related livelihood disruption and displacement can lead to emotions loneliness, despondency and depression. They cause uncertainty, fear, anger, irritability, hopelessness resulting in heightened and widespread stress, anxiety and trauma. Vulnerable groups are disproportionately harmed since they rely on their surroundings for sustenance and stability.
However, the nexus between mental health and climate-induced disasters have not been on the mainstream of climate change discourse.
The ACCRCC and its partners is here to raise the profile of these issues and are demanding that the mental health of people must be safeguarded in the context of climate crisis. SDG 3 on good health and wellbeing requires us all to prevent needless health suffering that could be prevented and endeavour to boost the health of communities. This goal aligns with the SDG 13 on Climate Action target on strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate related disasters. This calls Africa to action, to integrate psychological interventions to the climate change response for sustainable development.
